TRAC-V Regional
Whole Blood Program
TRAC-V leads a region-wide Whole Blood Program to improve survival for severely injured, hemorrhaging patients across the Rio Grande Valley.
Through partnerships with EMS agencies to administer WB in the pre-hospital setting and regional hospitals to serve as rotation sites, TRAC-V coordinates the program through standardized guidelines and processes, training, logistics, quality assurance, and performance improvement.
Why Whole Blood?
Uncontrolled hemorrhage is the leading cause of preventable trauma death. Modern evidence and published research indicates that whole blood resuscitation provides several advantages over crystalloid or component therapy:
-
LTO+WB – A single unit of fresh Whole Blood provides red cells, plasma, and platelets in one product for universal emergency transfusion
-
Reduces dilutional coagulopathy and hypothermia – fewer bags, less volume, and warmer administration help prevent worsening shock
-
Simplifies and speeds care in the field – one unit replaces the need to hang and sequence multiple components, reducing time to transfusion and potential errors
- Improved Survival in hemorrhagic shock – early pre-hospital whole blood resuscitation has shown better patient outcomes
